The growing gap between climate science and policymaking raises stark questions about what a 3°C hotter world will mean for humanity’s future. This report shows, using the latest evidence, that the planet has effectively reached 1.5°C of warming, with climate impacts unfolding faster and more violently than anticipated.
Crucial Earth systems—like polar ice sheets, forests, and permafrost—are nearing or passing tipping points, accelerating change through reinforcing feedbacks. With fossil fuel production still rising, and no peak in global emissions, warming beyond 2°C is virtually locked in. The likelihood of hitting or exceeding 3°C is now a serious risk.
A world 3°C hotter will be defined by unprecedented extremes: deadly heat, drought, floods, collapsing food systems, and mass displacement. Sea levels will be rising by metres. Societal stability will falter, and there is a real risk of economic, political, and state system collapse.
This report argues that current global policy frameworks—rooted in incrementalism and market-driven logic—are structurally incapable of addressing these existential threats. A new path is needed: one grounded in emergency mobilisation, state-led coordination, and climate-first economic planning.
The report calls for a decisive break from business-as-usual and makes the case for treating climate restoration as the defining priority of our time.
