Coastal and ocean ecosystems in Australia, including coral reefs, mangroves, and kelp forests, are rapidly degrading as the sixth mass extinction accelerates under climate change. Coral systems are vital, supporting up to half of all marine species during their life cycles. Historically, reef destruction has triggered oceanic ecological collapse and preceded mass extinctions, with recovery taking hundreds of thousands to millions of years. This case study explores the actions needed to provide maximum protection for the Great Barrier Reef, drawing on existing scientific literature. It focuses on identifying the critical Earth system parameters affecting the Reef and the environmental conditions necessary for its long-term resilience and biodiversity preservation. Central questions include what climate conditions are required to safeguard the Reef and what interventions are needed to restore it to a thriving state. The study emphasizes urgent, evidence-based action to prevent further degradation and secure the Reef’s ecological and societal value.
