At the heart of the project is a recognition that effective climate responses depend on a clear-eyed understanding of the scale, speed and seriousness of the challenge. While climate science continues to evolve rapidly, public understanding, political responses and institutional planning often lag significantly behind the implications of emerging evidence. Risks are frequently underestimated, delayed pathways normalised, and key scientific uncertainties misunderstood or poorly communicated.

The Climate Science Imperatives Project has therefore been established to help bridge this gap — reviewing, synthesising and translating climate science into practical strategic understanding that can inform policy, planning and public discourse.

The project examines the scientific, ecological and systemic conditions necessary to maintain a stable climate capable of supporting human civilisation and biodiverse ecosystems. It explores how changing atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations, warming trajectories, feedback loops and tipping risks may affect ecological stability, food and water systems, infrastructure, economic resilience and social stability.

A core focus of the project is identifying the parameters of a safe climate. This includes examining what atmospheric conditions are most likely to maintain climate stability, what warming thresholds carry unacceptable risks, and what emissions reductions and atmospheric drawdown trajectories may be required to restore safe climate conditions over time.

The project also seeks to strengthen understanding of the increasingly interconnected and systemic nature of climate risks. This includes assessing the implications of compound impacts, abrupt changes, tipping point interactions, regional instability and cascading risks that may emerge as warming intensifies.

Key questions explored through the project include:

The Climate Science Imperatives Project undertakes literature reviews, scientific synthesis, strategic analysis, expert engagement and commissioned research to help strengthen understanding of these questions. It also seeks to identify important knowledge gaps and areas where further scientific investigation may be urgently required.

Outputs may include major reports, briefings, scientific reviews, expert dialogues, public education materials and contributor-led publications designed to strengthen climate understanding and strategic capability across government, business and civil society.
