A major new report released today has issued a stark warning: without urgent and extraordinary action to cool the planet, Australia’s Great Barrier Reef — one of the world’s most cherished natural wonders — is on track for near-total collapse.
Titled The Great Barrier Reef: Protecting the Climate Vulnerable, the report draws on the latest scientific literature to outline a survival pathway for the Reef, which is rapidly deteriorating under the combined stress of marine heatwaves, mass bleaching events, and accelerating climate change.
Covering around 10% of the world’s coral reef ecosystems and home to more coral species than any other UNESCO World Heritage site, the Great Barrier Reef is not only a global biodiversity hotspot — it is a life-support system for over 500 million people worldwide who depend on coral ecosystems for food, livelihoods, and coastal protection.
Yet current policies are failing to offer real protection. Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are now above 420 parts per million — far beyond the scientifically identified safe limit of 320 ppm needed to preserve coral reef systems. Despite Australia’s efforts to reduce emissions, the Reef continues to degrade.
This report makes it clear that emissions reductions alone will not be enough, we now need to pursue a three-lever strategy that includes: rapidly reaching zero emissions, drawing down excess carbon from the atmosphere, and investigating the potential for safe near-term strategies to cool the planet.
The report identifies temporary, well-governed climate interventions, such as marine cloud brightening or other solar reflection strategies — as potentially necessary to buy time for coral ecosystems while emissions are slashed and carbon is removed. It also highlights the governance, risk, and ethical considerations that such strategies would entail.
But the message is clear: without rapid near-term cooling, the Reef will not survive.

The Great Barrier Reef is far more than an iconic natural treasure. It is a barometer for the health of ocean ecosystems around the globe. Coral systems underpin the life cycle of up to half of all marine species, and their collapse could trigger cascading ecological failures. Similar coral reef declines have preceded past mass extinction events in Earth’s history, collapses from which recovery took millions of years.
The new report argues for an urgent, dedicated research and advocacy program focused on “maximum protection” for climate-vulnerable systems, starting with the Reef. That means identifying the Earth system conditions needed for coral to thrive and acting decisively to bring those conditions about.
There is still a narrow window in which meaningful action can be taken, but it will take courage, leadership, and a willingness to confront the scale of the crisis head-on. Australia must play a leading role, not only as custodian of the Reef, but as a global advocate for emergency climate action.
